100 Questions for Artists

1.) Introduce yourself! What kind of art do you make?
i'm claire cloverkeep! i draw exclusively pokemon gijinkas. sometimes i draw other stuff, like my mascots. but that's pretty few and far between.
2.) How long have you been making art?
for as long as i can remember, as cliche as it is to say. what? it's the truth!
3.) How many hours do you spend for each piece?
a lot. i used to be able to draw maybe 6 or so pieces (fully shaded, mind you) in a single day with enough dedication. now, i can barely finish one piece in a day. and i don't shade anymore. it is what it is...
4.) Do you prefer taking your time or do you like to quickly move on to the next thing?
i take my time. it's good for me.
5.) When do you decide a piece is finished?
after i'm completely and utterly sick of it. kidding~ i decide i'm done when i feel content with it. varies from piece to piece depending on what i want from it.
6.) What part of the creation process do you enjoy the most?
sketching. fun fact, none of my lineart is actually lineart! it's aaall cleaned-up sketches, baby! there's a lot of fun to be had in the in-between state of things. i feel the most in my element when i'm planning out a piece or doodling in the margins of a notebook.
7.) What part of the creation process do you dislike the most?
...everything else. i refuse to do proper lineart, coloring is a chore (although it can be relaxing sometimes...), and don't even get me started on shading.
8.) Do you have a designated workstation or do you just work wherever?
if i'm drawing digitally, then it's wherever. i've worked on my couch, my bed, my girlfriend's bed, hallways, waiting rooms... i draw on my phone, so it's with me most of the time. if i'm drawing traditionally, always my desk. or a desk in general. i can't draw well on uneven surfaces.
9.) Do you monetize you work or is it purely a hobby?
purely a hobby, at least for right now. i've thought about letting people pay me to see ~exclusive stuff~ but i don't know... it's scary... and i'll never, ever take commissions. sorry! if i'm not drawing for myself first and foremost, i go a little insane.
10.) Where do you share your work? On social media or a personal websites? Do you keep to yourself and close friends?
i share my work here, on this site! only a portion of it, though. i share an even smaller portion on my tumblr. i prefer to keep my work to my immediate friends. the only person who sees every single thing i draw ever is my girlfriend.
11.) What's an aspect of your art you enjoy?
my sketches, firstly. i like the look of them when they're only partially cleaned up, when you can distinguish the preferred lines, but still get a little messiness... i also quite like drawing all sorts of different body types, and facial features, and everything like that. i really try my best in that department. oh, oh! and! my character designs. i'm real proud of those.
12.) What are things you would like to improve on?
i think i can always try and draw everything better. but, for specifics, likely noses. i don't retread the same ones too often, but i also don't want to start.
13.) Are you self-taught or had formal education?
self-taught. i took two art classes in high school, but they didn't really teach me anything other than i should never take art classes again. they're not good for the soul.
14.) Do you research about old techniques or stick to newer ones?
i just do whatever i have to be so real.
15.) What do you value more, experimentation or mastery?
healthy mix of both, but leaning more towards experimentation. consistency is a curse and we should all just do whatever we want forever! lalala~ lalala~ yay!!
[we all hold hands and skip along together and WOAH no ways guys is that a rainbow above us??!?!?]
16.) Do you practice drawing from the arm? What other art techniques to you practice?
kind of? i draw with both my arm and my wrist. i gotta try and focus more on my arm, though. i also practice taking breaks and stretching and drinking water.
17.) How frequently do you do studies?
if i want to draw, i want to draw my characters making out (and they're both girls). not clothing folds i'm afraid.
18.) Do you understand color theory? How'd you learn or do you want to?
i understand it well enough. i always check my values with a grayscale filter. i think i just learned intuitively. or through osmosis.
19.) Favorite color(s)?
pink, green, and brown. is it obvious?
20.) Are there colors you avoid? Do you think ugly colors exists?
i avoid desaturated colors when i can, especially with browns. i simply prefer more lively colors. i don't think any colors are ug-

o-oh...!! unpleasantgradient-senpai...! i-i didn't think i'd see you here...! [scratches back of neck] [makes eye contact and immediately looks away] [blushes]
21.) Can you do perspective?
i can bullshit it, so yes.
22.) Do you like doing lineart? How do you go about it?
...let's just move on before i hurt myself.
23.) Do you have multiple unfinished projects? Will you ever get to finishing them?
always. sometimes. i juggle projects professionally, and i have a tendency to abandon pieces or sketches for pieces after some time. the only project i know i'll finish is my game.
24.) How do you start a new piece? Do you have a plan or just figure it along the way?
mix of both. for larger pieces, i plan them out quite thoroughly in the thumbnail stage. but, for smaller stuff, i just figure it out as i go. there are exceptions to both of these also.
25.) How do you handle art block?
take a break, do something else that'll get the creative juices flowing again. writing, reading, gaming, anything.
26.) Do you listen to music or watch something while working?
i always listen to music. sometimes a video, sometimes a podcast. but typically music. i like listening to happy, upbeat songs while i work. or really intense stuff. genre doesn't matter to me as long as i like it.
27.) When are you most motivated to create? In the morning or evening? Rainy or sunny?
i'm always motivated to create. it's both a blessing and a curse...
28.) Are your sketchbooks messy or aesthetically pleasing?
messy. i like looking at other peoples' highly curated sketchbooks, but it's not my thing.
29.) Do you like showing sketchbooks to others?
select sketches and pages, yes. whole sketchbooks, no.
30.) Do you have any art friends? IRL or online?
i have a few, yes. both irl and online. i cherish them greatly, as i do with all my friends.
31.) Do you collaborate frequently with your friends? Is there something you'd like to work on together?
on art projects, not really. but on other stuff, absolutely! i'd love to do a ttrpg with all my friends someday. i think that'd be real fun.
32.) Have you created art to gift to others? How do feel about parting away from your work?
yes! i've drawn lots of pieces for birthdays and what have you. i feel fine with it. most of that stuff is older, anyways.
33.) Have you drawn for someone else? Like commissions or requests? Did you enjoy it?
requests, yes. funny story, i posted about doing requests on deviantart back in the day, and i got so many requests that i ended up deleting my account from stress. safe to say, i do not like it.
34.) How's your posture?
[clearly having just sat up straight] good okay next question.
35.) Have you ever been injured making art?
not majorly. i have wrist pain for a different reason. sometimes i'll draw so much i make my hands sore? is that anything?
36.) What's a medium of art you've wanted to try / currently attempting?
i love the look of watercolors. and before i had to stop doing traditional art, i was getting the hang of colored pencils.
37.) Do you prefer stylized or realistic art?
stylized all the way. that's what i draw, after all! though, i do like looking at art that's a mix of both.
38.) Do you like hyper-realistic art?
eeeh... it's impressive, i guess? not my thing.
39.) Do you like abstract art?
i think it's neat. fun to tilt your head about.
40.) How do you feel about fine art?
lots of beautiful works out there in that category. though, i don't really get what makes it so fine? my favorite painting is a sunday afternoon on the island of la grande jatte by georges seurat. does that even count??
41.) How do you feel about outsider art? Do you think you fall in that category?
it's alright. looks cool. i don't think i fall in that category. i've been tainted by the conventions of the art world and it has made me want to draw anime women sucking face.
42.) Do you follow art trends?
not at all. i do my own thang.
43.) Do you think your art is influenced by what's currently popular?
absolutely not. i get around to watching and reading and playing stuff on average about three years after it's done being cool.
44.) Do you compare yourself with others? Does it affect you negatively?
not anymore. i used to do it all the time, and it was the worst. i've really internalized going at my own pace, though. everyone's journeys will be different, especially with art. i'm happy with where i am now. that's what matters most.
45.) Your controversial art take?
...what even is a controversial art take...?
46.) Art related pet peeves?
i don't like badmouthing other artists. everyone has their own preferences, and that's what's wonderful about being human. but, please... please... do not let your glasses girl shed her glasses... don't ever draw her without them please she needs them to see... oh and also i think more people should draw body hair on women. please. #bushluvr
47.) Who or what are your inspirations?
my biggest inspiration when i was a kid was pokemon and precure. now, it's all over the place. ryoko kui is a big one, i'd say. i try to draw all of my characters with different eye shapes because of her. hitoshi ashinano's sketches at the end of some ykk chapters have really helped me let loose in my own art. i can't pinpoint more specifics than that. my art is a chimera of everything i've ever liked, and that's hard to make a list of.
48.) What's an art piece / artist you wished got more attention?
every art piece and every artist ever. i think more people should check out suzushiro's maid to skate, however! as well as the rest of their work!
49.) Have you touch grass recently? Do you go out frequently or do you spend most of your time indoors?
i spend a lot of time inside, but i want to get out more. once summer passes and it gets cooler outside, i definitely will.
50.) Do you create art daily?
it's okay if i don't, but i like to if i can.
51.) Do you take breaks from creating? How frequently?
i had to take a two or so month break at the beginning of this year because of my wrists. it was torture. i hope to never take a break like that again. i do take breaks for my hands while drawing, though.
52.) Do you set deadline for your work?
nope. it gets done when it gets done. what else can you do with chronic wrist pain.
53.) Do you archive your work? Do you keep old pieces?
yes! i keep pretty much everything i can.
54.) Are you embarrassed of your old work? Or are you indifferent by it?
not at all. it's very common to be embarrassed by old art, and i don't judge anyone who does. i get it. i used to feel the same way. but i love my old art. looking back on how far i've come, seeing the ambitious ideas i was able to execute despite my limited skillset, being impressed by things i can no longer feasibly do... it's a treat. i'm very proud of anything i've ever made, no matter how old it is.
55.) Do you seek out for criticism? How do you handle feedback?
no. i will cry like a baby.
56.) Are you harsh on your own work? Or do you love your work despite all it's flaws?
i love my work. i love my work despite it all. i love what i make with my entire being. i really hope that shows.
57.) Do you get compliments frequently? How do feel about them?
decently frequently. i have to assume my girlfriend counts, right? i like getting compliments. everyone does, right? whenever someone points out some little detail they like about my art, i blossom into a beautiful and elegant flower.
58.) How do feel about the rise of generative AI? Do you use it for getting ideas or references?
FUCK GENAI. DON'T USE THAT SHIT EVER.
why would i use it for ideas when i can use my brain and think of my own ideas? why use it for references when i can use my brain to look up perfectly good human-made photos? i quite like having a brain. i quite like using it too.
59.) How do feel about tracing? What about tracing 3d models to streamline art process?
people get all up in arms about tracing nowadays. it's literally fine who cares. if you want to, then do it. i only trace stuff i know i can't draw from imagination, and my method goes as follows: trace the photo you're referencing, adjust proportions to your style, trace over your adjusted trace over. bam! now you've got something that looks like how you want it to, but still within your own way of doing things.
60.) Drop you art resources!
i... don't? have any? not off the top of my head at least. sorry.
61.) Do you prefer making fanart or original content?
original content all the way. i'm simply not built for fanart. if i don't draw my characters, i'll die.
62.) Do you think original content are more creative than fanart?
i've seen my fair share of insanely unique compositions for fanart. so no. we're all equals here.
63.) Do you strive for originality?
yes and no. i like to think i do some pretty creative things with my work. but we all get the inspiration from somewhere. no one should strive for pure, untainted originality. you learn pretty quick that it'll get you nowhere in the long run.
64.) Do you draw from imagination or heavily rely on references?
mix of both. i'm comfortable enough with my art that i don't feel the need to use references for everything, but i still do for tricky stuff. such as a certain someone's motocompo.
65.) Do you think using references is a crutch?
not at all. of course, try and draw from imagination if you can. building that skill is important. but there's no harm in using references if you need or want them. even the so-called greats used references.
66.) Do you like to make mood boards or scroll through Pinterest?
eh. used to. still have an account and use it occasionally. i don't like to take heavy inspiration from anything on social media, though.
67.) Does your work have a story behind them or do you just make things that you think look neat?
there's always a story. i've tried to make characters without stories, like my mascots, but then i can't help myself and end up giving them something anyways... i can't help it. i'm an artist and a writer, what do you expect?
68.) Do you think art should have a purpose?
doesn't have to. my art does, and the purpose is keeping me alive and happy. just that is enough, isn't it?
69.) Favorite aesthetic?
you know, i think generalizing art based on "aesthetics" or "cores" isn't a good practice and highly flattens the message and intent of whatever art is being grouped into such categories– [i am dragged kicking and screaming off the stage]
70.) Do you have a muse or a theme you fall back to?
love, despite it all. love, over everything. pretty much everything i make goes back to love at some point.
71.) If you could eat you art, what would it taste like?
hmm... something sweet. honey and strawberry crepes, perhaps? oh, but wills (my game) is blood. wills tastes like blood.
72.) If your work suddenly became sentient, would it adore or hate you?
i'm not a very nice person to my characters. it would probably hate me.
73.) Based on previous question, can you win in a fist fight against it?
"you get back here!!" screams drawing of girl a, rushing towards me with an uppercut.
i dodge with effortless grace by the skin of my teeth, only to see that, suddenly, drawing of girl b is hot on my tail!?
"grraaah!! you jerk!! i'll make you pay!!" she says.
i dodge again, only for the two drawings of girls to collide... and start to kiss one another!? with their hands interlocked, they share a tender kiss on the lips... before beating me into a pulp.
74.) Is your art style consistent? Do you prefer making a wide variety of art?
somewhat? i don't strive for consistency, but i guess muscle memory prevails. i tend to end up drawing the same things, but i do like drawing different things when i can.
75.) Do you revisit old concepts or sketches? Do you touch em up or leave them as is?
sometimes. it depends. if it's good, then yes. if it's bad, then no. even then, it's not a guarantee. i just do whatever.
76.) Do you believe in talent or is it all skill?
no one is naturally gifted with a proficiency in art, it takes time. but some people learn faster than others, at younger ages. some people start later, and have to take more time. everyone's different. just keep at it and you'll get somewhere you like.
77.) What's your favorite thing to draw / make? Do you prefer making living things or still life?
girls with glasses. honestly, just girls in general. i prefer drawing people over anything. for a specific thing with people, i love drawing expressions.
78.) Do you create your art with a specific audience in mind? Who?
yes, and that audience is me, me, me!! i don't draw for anyone other than myself! if i'm not lovin' it, then i'm not drawing it!!
79.) How do you feel about people taking inspiration from work? Do you think art style theft is real?
i think inspiration is fine as long as you're not straight up copying. even then, it's kind of a nonissue unless you're trying to steal someone's entire branding. like, don't try and copy absolutely everything and i think it's fine.
80.) Do you participate in art conventions? Do you sell your work or support everyone else?
i'd like to, one day, but i never have. i've gone to a single convention and i bought a print there, though.
81.) Are you art materials expensive? Do you hoard any tools?
eh? i have a set of prismacolor pencils. i have some good fineliners, too. i don't really hoard stuff, i just have stuff i've accumulated over years of buying art supplies.
82.) Do you organize you supplies and tools systematically?
they're all going in a single pencil pouch sorry i don't make the rules.
83.) Do you clean up after a project? Or do you just leave everything lying around till you need the space?
i clean up, relatively. my desk is always cluttered, but i put my art supplies away.
84.) Do you have a ritual before you start creating? Do you have a drink or some snacks?
i always make sure to have water with me, but i don't have anything specific. i don't even do warmups before jumping into a piece.
85.) How do feel about censorship in art? Where do you draw the line for inappropriate art?
point blank, i don't like it. no one's artistic vision deserves to be censored for some arbitrary reasons. even if i personally don't like it. i abide by the rule of i stay in my lane, you stay in yours.
86.) Do you censor your own art? Do you feel like you leave out details for it be socially accepted?
i don't. i put warnings on the sensitive stuff in the gallery, but none of the actual contents are changed. i'm past the point of desiring social acceptance. i just want to draw what i want to draw.
87.) Do you feel intimated with starting a new projects?
not at all. i feel intimidated when i get halfway through a project and have to see it to the finish line.
88.) Are you scared of your art regressing? Do you think it's even possible to get worst at art?
i don't even think that's possible for me, given how differently i draw now compared to how i used to. i was scared i would fall out of practice with my wrist injury, but that's different. i think people's goals in art can change, and people not in the know might think that's regression when it really isn't. that's the extent of my opinion on this.
89.) Do you frequently make compromises for your work? Does your art come out the way you envision them?
yes. the scope of wills has been cut down immensely on the art front. i just don't have it in me to draw three thousand sprites. other than that, everything's still how i want it. my art tends to always come out the way i want, even if i have to cut corners.
90.) How well do you manage your mistakes? Do you stress about them?
sometimes on a hard day i stress out and have to take a break or quit for the day. sometimes things just don't turn out good on the first try, and trying over and over and over can be draining. on a good day, though, i go ladidadida and continue on when i mess up.
91.) Do you make lists of things you'd like to make? Do you actual commit to them?
yes. and it depends. i have a tendency to put too much on my plate.
92.) What is your ultimate goal of your work? Like, is to tell a story, connect with others, or just to enjoy the process?
all three. i want to tell the story i want to tell, reach likeminded people, and enjoy every step along the way.
93.) What's something you've recently worked on that you're really proud of?
all the art for my site. at the time of writing this, i'm not finished with it all, but i know i'll be proud of all of it.
94.) Do you have any dream projects? Have you started on them?
my video game, wills align. it's a visual novel currently in production. i hope you'll play it someday! i'd also love to make an rpg after wills is done and dusted and i take a nice long vacation.
95.) Would you prefer unlimited money or unlimited time to make your projects?
unlimited time. sure, money could get me better equipment, but i'm doing just fine with what i have. i want to make everything ever and unlimited time would let me do that.
96.) Why do you create art?
to live. to share my soul to others. if i don't create it, who will?
97.) Are you happy with what you create?
absolutely. if i told little baby me what i draw, i think she'd be utterly ecstatic. i come back to that thought often.
98.) Do you think everyone should make art?
yes. yes, yes, yes. everyone should make art. it's good for you.
99.) What's advice you'd give to newer artist?
do what you want, not what the tutorials and people online say you have to draw. art styles aren't real don't give in to their lies. the best time to start is now. keep trying, even if it's hard. keep going, even if you think you're not good enough. keep drawing. you're the only person that can make your art. the world needs your art in it. the world is a better place with your art in it.
100.) When did you finish this? How'd you feel?
8:39pm on july 20th, 2026. i feel good. i'm going to draw some more tomorrow!!
go back
